Which Jeep Wrangler Delivers The Most Off-Road Value?

The Jeep Wrangler is the world’s most recognizable off-road vehicle – and understandably so, given it hews closely to the same formula first developed over 80 years ago. Today’s Wrangler is a thoroughly modern affair and, unlike early spartan Jeeps, are available in ten different trim levels, which might make a purchasing decision a little tricky. Car and Driver has found what it believes is the sweet spot, and Stivers Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram passes it on to you.

First, choosing the best Wrangler has much to do with how much and what kind of off-roading you want to do. And make no mistake; you should take your Wrangler off-road. There is simply no denying that much of the engineering that makes the Jeep so capable off-road comes at the expense of some on-road refinement and fuel efficiency. Taking your Wrangler off-road makes those compromises worth it. But never take it off road? Let’s just acknowledge that great Wrangler imagery notwithstanding, there are other models that will better suit your needs, including within the Jeep brand.

American automobile manufacturer Willys designed and built most of the original war Jeeps (Ford provided additional manufacturing capacity). Jeep honors that with its Willys trim, which is third up from the bottom of the model hierarchy. Car and Driver considers this a good starting point, stating: “The Willys trim is the most affordable version that adds important standard equipment to get this SUV off the pavement. It rides on 17-inch black wheels wrapped in 33-inch mud-terrain tires, or you can upgrade to 35-inch tires. A rear-axle locker comes standard on the Willys, which is important if one wheel loses traction while the other one is up in the air.”

Part of the Willys’ power lies in its flexibility. It is available in both the 2-door body style, with compact dimensions that are best for technical off-roading, and the 4-door body style, which is still quite capable but far more convenient for families or everyday use.

The Willys comes standard with a 3.6-liter V6, which is rated at 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual is standard, with the 8-speed automatic as a $3000 option. A sort-of no-cost option is the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4, which sacrifices some horsepower (rated at 270 horsepower) for greater low-end grunt, with peak torque rated at 295 lb-ft. This engine also delivers slightly better city/highway/combined fuel economy (20/23/21 MPG city/ highway/ combined vs. 18/23/20). The “sort-of” qualifier is because the 8-speed automatic is the only available transmission, which costs $2,500.

One new development for 2026, the Willys becomes the most affordable trim level to be available with the 6.4-liter Hemi V8. Dubbed “392” for its displacement in cubic inches, it produces a truly impressive 470 horsepower, though with an expected hit in fuel economy (13/16/14). The 4XE Plug-in hybrid drivetrain is no longer offered by Jeep.

If you really seek to challenge the Wrangler and yourself off-road, Car and Driver recommends adding the $4,495 X-treme 35-inch tire package, which gives it a stance and clearance similar to the Rubicon models.

Higher trim levels offer niceties such as power-adjustable front seats, Nappa leather, a useful off-road camera system, and a couple of removable top options. The best off-road hardware is available on the Wrangler Rubicon, which, in addition to the aforementioned 35-inch tires, has front and rear locking differentials, anti-roll disconnect for additional wheel articulation, a heavy-duty rear axle, and steel rock rails, among other details.

Again, it is helpful to have a clear sense of your off-road intentions going in, as additional off-road hardware gets expensive and often reduces fuel economy and on-road refinement. With the passing of the Plug-in Hybrid, you can no longer configure a six-figure Wrangler, but a Rubicon over $90K is still possible.
