How far will the Pacifica PHEV really go in the Alabama summer heat?

The EPA rates the Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid at 32 miles of all-electric range and 30 mpg combined after the battery runs down, and yes, that easily covers the zoo run on electrons alone, but plan for a slight haircut on the hottest August afternoons, and blame the AC pulling from the drive battery. Heat puts meaningful drag on battery efficiency out here. The HVAC system feeds from the same 16 kWh lithium-ion pack that turns the wheels. None of that sinks the trip. It means you plan for 26 to 30 usable miles rather than the full 32 on a scorching afternoon.

The round trip from Prattville to the Zoo on Coliseum Parkway is about 30 miles. A full charge the night before covers it. What it won’t cover is a detour to Chick-fil-A on the way home and then a school pickup across town. Know your route before you leave, and you’re fine.

With the battery charged, the EPA attributes 82 MPGe combined to the Pacifica PHEV. Run the round trip on electric and you’re counting fuel savings in gallons, not fractions.

Where do you charge locally before or after the Zoo?
